Fate
The Germans are convinced that there is something sacred
about women and that they have a gift of prophecy, and they
never ignore their predictions.
Tacit "The origin of the
Germans"
Here I would like to tell that, however
strange it may seem, soothsayers and their prophecies that come
true by no means make the film unrealistic. Because the 13th warrior
is not just a period film - it conveys the specific atmosphere
of history and myth merged together, the same atmosphere that
feels through the pages of its original source. (I don't know
of any other such example.) There is a lot of evidence in the
film that its idea has received much thought. . In particular,
the theme of fate is highlighted. I was completely struck to see
the second soothsayer smile when she first saw Arab. It appeared
that she also knew that the thirteenth warrior would be someone
who is not from the north).!
The notion that the future is already
decided by fate has been part of human beliefs from very old times
and it has not disappeared altogether. And it could not be different,
since this approach provided a great advantage, namely, it saved
from vain and harmful fear of the next day in a tough and dangerous
life.
As for predictions of one's destiny they
are still popular, no wonder they were fully relied on in those
times. Let's take Icelandic sagas (close in time to the film),
which rightfully claim to be most realistic literary works of
all time. They teem with prophetic dreams and fortune-telling.Snorry
Godi was the cleverest man in Iceland among those who could not
foresee the future) And the events in these sagas take place in
a time period later than in the 13th warrior. So there is nothing
far-fetched in dreams that come true and within their concept
the authors are perfectly right while the way they are faithful
to their idea and never contradict themselves is a good lesson
to learn.
